It is important to identify the size, type and number of tendons used in a member, since the force contained can vary from a few tonnes in smaller wires up to 1000 tonnes in some multi-strand cables. The demolition of prestressed concrete bridges can be more difficult than any other concrete structures due to the energy stored in the prestressing tendons. Post-tensioned tendons contain a large amount of stored energy which makes demolishing structures that contain them a problem. Sudden release can produce a missile that can fly 100 m or more with a velocity enough to penetrate a board fence. More serious is the potential for injury to workmen or the public. This is particularly the case when the tendons are unbonded or partly bonded, since there is nothing to contain the energy and prevent the anchorages being projected from the end of the member like a missile. Bridge demolition techniques depend on many factors, both technical and tactical. The military objective depends on the situation, but mainly two cases are possible. The first one would be to remove an old condemned bridge. In this instance, the objective would be to cut the bridge into sections that could be easily removed. An important consideration for explosive demolitions is the collateral damage to nearby structures, is there are. The second one would be to create a gap in the bridge structure large enough so that it could not be crossed with assault bridging equipment, hence denying access to vehicle traffic.
